China-Laos 500kV Power Interconnection Project Transmission Line Completed with CEEC’s Design Contributions

On February 5, the transmission line of the China‑Laos 500kV Power Interconnection Project, with critical survey and design contributions from China Energy Engineering Group Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute, achieved full completion. This milestone launches the project’s commissioning countdown and marks a new chapter in China-Laos energy cooperation.

Spanning 177.5 km from Oudomxay Province in Laos to Xishuangbanna in China’s Yunnan Province, the project is a strategic energy initiative under the Action Plan on Building a China-Laos Community with a Shared Future. It also represents the first high-voltage, large-scale power interconnection project between China and Lancang-Mekong nations.

Scheduled to be operational in April, the project will enable a two-way power transfer capacity of up to 1,500 MW, facilitating the annual transmission of approximately 3 billion kWh of clean electricity. This will significantly bolster regional energy security and optimal resource allocation, while enabling broader, large-scale bidirectional power trading between the two countries.
