Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof Visits Batang Ai Floating Solar Project

On April 12, the Honorable Dato' Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, visited the Batang Ai 50 MW Floating Solar Project. With China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. as its EPC contractor, it is the first large-scale floating solar power plant in Sarawak State, Malaysia.

Located at the reservoir of the Batang Ai Hydropower Station, the project is a flagship of China-Malaysia energy cooperation. It features an installed capacity of 50 MW and an annual mean generation of approximately 93 GWh. Since achieving full-capacity grid connection in March 2025, the project has achieved coordinated operation with the existing 108 MW hydropower station, forming a clean energy base with a total installed capacity of 158 MW. This has significantly reduced the need for fossil fuel-based peak shaving. In response to the Malaysian government’s Energy Mix Diversification strategy, the project is driving the green and low-carbon transition of Sarawak State, and the country as a whole.
