On September 13 local time, the first solar pile was installed at the Abydos Solar PV and Energy Storage Project - Phase II in Egypt. It is the largest solar-storage project in Africa constructed under an EPC contract by a consortium of Energy China International, Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction Co., Ltd., and Southwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. This milestone marks the official launch of full-scale construction, laying a solid foundation for subsequent work.
The installation of over 250,000 solar piles, a core component of the project’s infrastructure, will proceed in a phased and orderly manner. These piles are engineered to high standards, incorporating considerations for local climate and geology. Each is equipped with an advanced smart single-axis tracker, ensuring the PV modules accurately follow the sun’s path to maximize energy generation efficiency.
Located in Egypt’s southern desert, the project spans over 20 square kilometers and involves works regarding 1 GW of PV capacity, 600 MWh of energy storage, a 500 kV substation, and auxiliary facilities. Once fully operational, the project will supply power to more than 500,000 households, reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by 1.56 million tons.
